Maths – The Big Idea

Eight year olds at Capel Manor Primary School have demonstrated their understanding of maths by solving problems in a new way.

Pupils carried out a range of activities based on Professor Mike Askew’s ‘Big Ideas in Mathematics’ which aims to show that all pupils can be mathematicians, given the right learning environment to take on engaging and challenging problems. As pupils go about practical work, measuring and recording data, they have been discovering that maths can be fun.

Following a ‘Maths Conference’ organised by Enfield Council and Headteachers, Primary schools across Enfield are teaching programmes designed to improve children’s understanding of mathematical concepts.

Capel Manor are also celebrating achieving a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted who praised their teamwork, quality of teaching and the continuing improvement in pupils achievements.
